How to search old iMessages on a Mac
Start with Apple Messages search, narrow the exchange using the person and a detail, then check the original conversation.

Search in Messages first
Open Messages on your Mac and use the search field at the top of the sidebar. Enter a name, word or phrase you associate with the exchange. Select a relevant filter when offered, or press Return to see the results.
You can combine search criteria to narrow the results. Select a result to open the conversation at the matching part of the transcript. These steps follow Apple’s Messages search documentation. The available suggestions and categories depend on the macOS version.
Narrow an exchange by the person and a clue
Begin with a distinctive clue: a place, document name or unusual word is often easier to recognize than a broad subject. When Messages offers a person or other filter, combine it with the clue. Read the surrounding exchange to confirm you have the right conversation.
If an exact phrase does not return what you expected, try a shorter part you are more certain about. People sometimes use a different name for a place or put the detail in a later reply. Read the surrounding replies to confirm the exchange.
Check the date and the surrounding messages
An early suggestion may have been replaced by a later plan. Once you reach the result, read enough of the conversation to distinguish a possibility, a commitment and a change.
For a photo, link or document, inspect the result and the messages around it. The object you remember can be a useful clue to the exchange, even when the wording is vague.
When the message is missing
Check that you are looking at the right conversation and that the history is actually available on this Mac. Local availability, account settings and deletion are different questions from search wording.
Check Apple’s recovery options for recently deleted messages. Search and connected history use the messages that are still available to your account and devices.
When you remember the conversation but not the app
