Inbox follow-up reminders: what each one watches, and when to set your own

Apple's Mail guide for the Mac describes its follow-up feature in two places, in two different ways. One page says that if you send a message and don't get a response "in 3 days", the email resurfaces at the top of your inbox [1]. The settings page describes the same checkbox as acting after "several days" [2]. Google's Gmail help page describes its follow-up nudges without giving any timing [3].

The rest of the documentation is similarly thin. Apple Mail's and Gmail's automatic suggestions are described entirely in terms of email inside that mail app. Their help pages don't say how long they wait, beyond Apple's two wordings, or what counts as an answer. If a follow-up matters, set a reminder with a date you choose. Treat the automatic suggestion as a backup.

What the automatic suggestions are documented to watch

We read each vendor's current help page on 30 September 2026. "Not stated" means the page doesn't say.

Several details sit behind those rows. In Apple Mail, you swipe left on a suggestion to ignore it. To turn the feature off, choose Mail > Settings > General and deselect Follow Up Suggestions [1]. Gmail's two nudge settings are under Settings > See all settings > General > Nudges, and they work only with conversation view turned on [3].

Gmail's AI Inbox works from incoming mail. It skips messages you have archived, deleted, muted or snoozed, and it doesn't support attachments, delegated inboxes or encrypted email. It is available only in the US and in English, on a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra plan, or on Workspace Enterprise Plus with Gemini Beta [4]. Google describes its to-dos as coming from incoming email, so it isn't documented as a way to track mail you sent.

Microsoft's example prompt for Copilot asks it to find people who haven't replied "after 24 hours". Those 24 hours are text the user types, not a setting. These agentic inbox features arrived through Microsoft's Frontier programme from 27 April 2026 [5]. Business users need a Microsoft Copilot license. For individual Microsoft 365 subscribers, Microsoft lists Frontier features as available initially in web Word and Excel and in Copilot chat on the web, and early features as English-only for US-based subscribers [6]. Neither Microsoft page says whether individual subscribers can use the Outlook follow-up prompt. A separate Copilot feature, "Prioritize my inbox", ranks incoming mail. It doesn't track follow-ups [7].

What none of the pages say

None of the Apple or Gmail pages we checked says whether a suggestion takes account of a reply that came some other way. That includes an answer by text or phone, one given in a meeting, a reply from a different address, and an answer in a new thread. Apple doesn't define what counts as a "response". This gap is in the documentation. It doesn't prove the features miss those replies, but it does mean you can't rely on them to catch one.

Reminders you set yourself

A dated reminder doesn't try to detect anything. It returns the message at the time you chose, whether or not anyone has replied.

Microsoft's own advice on flagging a sent message makes the case for a timer. Because the message will be "out of sight in your Sent Items folder", Microsoft recommends adding a reminder for yourself [12]. Microsoft's feature list shows flags and reminders as available in Outlook for Mac [13]. We didn't verify the menu steps for Outlook for Mac or the new Outlook for Windows, so check them in the app.

Choosing between them

Leave a follow-up to an automatic suggestion only when all three of these are true:

1. The answer will come by email, to the same mailbox, from the address you wrote to.
2. A late or missing suggestion would cost you little, because Apple's two pages disagree on the timing and Google gives none.
3. You don't need the follow-up by a particular date.

Otherwise set a dated reminder. That applies especially when you promised something yourself, when the request was made in a meeting or on a call, when the reply may come by text or from an assistant, and when there is a deadline.

Five open loops on a Monday (fictional)

Rae is an invented person, and the addresses and exchanges are made up. Rae starts the week with five things outstanding. The table compares what Apple Mail's and Gmail's suggestions are documented to do with each.

Counting by what each tool's documentation covers: an automatic suggestion matches two of the five loops. Loop 1 matches both tools, and loop 5 matches Gmail only. Loop 2 may produce a false alarm. Loops 3 and 4 fall outside anything the pages describe. This is an illustration built from the documented triggers, not a measured rate.

When the promise wasn't made by email
